A common question that I get asked by DIY bloggers is whether they should use a Roller or Spray Gun?
While each have benefits if you know how to use them effectively your life will become a whole lot easier. Firstly I would like to talk about using a roller for the bulk of the painted areas.
This is more of the traditional technique which has been around for years and superseded the wide brush by itself.
Roller (& brush):
If this is the approach that you decide to use a couple of things that you may want to consider are:
- Making sure that you buy a good quality roller cover: Personally atN J Roberts Painting & Decorating Serviceswe use good quality manufactured brands such as Purdy. While the initial outlay may be significantly more it will save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Cheaper inferior brands commonly found in your local hardware outlet will often shed the synthetic fibres while applying paint which means extra work removing it either when the paint is wet of sanding once it has dried.
- Instead of using a 9" /230mm roller frame why not purchase a larger 460mm roller frame this will ensure that you are covering twice the area in shorter period of time meaning that those valuable hours that you spend outside of work will be slashed in half.
- Cutting in: when rolling into the areas that have been cutting in with a brush why not consider rolling along the length of it i.e if you have used a brush to cut in cornice you can roller horizontally across the wall which will eliminate the difference in roller marks if you havent meet them evenly. You also want to buy a smaller roller frame & roller (same nap size)so that you have more control when doing this. By doing this you will make your DIY project look more professional.
- Whilst you have a lot more control as a DIY project using this method it is definitely more time intensive but can benefit you in the fact that you don't need to continuously hire a spray gun for an extended period of time.
If you do need any assistance with choosing the right product for the job why not have a look at ouronline shopand use what we use
Spray Gun:
If this is the approach that you decide to use a couple of things that you may want to consider are:
- If you are using a spray gun for the first time it can be time intensive to work out exactly how to use the machine it can take a couple of months to master a new machine even for professionals. Once you work out the spray settings etc, this method will be hands down faster that the roller method.
- Like all forms of painting preparation if the key. You will need to make sure that you have everything covered up to avoid and overspray drifting onto areas that arent part of the project. 3M have a great product the 3M Masking Gun M3000 which makes like work of covering up areas that need protection, ideal for covering anything from windows to doors etc. if you use 3M ScotchBlue Painters Masking Tape For Corners which has a 14 safe removal period. Also drop sheets are required if you are doing a repaint and even though it might seem annoying having to put them down/set them in place it will save you hours of cleaning overspray off surfaces.Zipwall also manufacture a product designed to eliminate/contain overspray, dust etc it is calledZipWall barrier Systemwhich have many add-on accessories to suit your project needs.
- If you do decide on purchasing a budget/entry level spray guns is alot of them are not airless and you have to dilute the paint with water /turps depending on whether it is water or oil based which can be frustrating & messy if you are doing anything besides a small project. So it may be better to hire one or purchase a better unit and then resell it after you have finished the project.
- When you are Spraying the key is to backroll the substrate that you have just painted as it will give it a more even finish and if you ever need to touch up and area it will be much easier to do with a roller that too cover everything in the room.
There is no simple answer to this question it really comes down to how confident you are with your DIY project. If you decide to use the Roller method you can achieve good results just remember that it is going to be more time intensive and you will lose a lot of free time that you could be spending relaxing. Where as if you decide to go for the spray gun method you are going to spend less time painting but will spend more on buying paint & preparing the surfaces to ensure you limit overspray.
Remember that with whichever method you choose preparation is the key to any project and the end result will benefit from good preparation. If this all sounds like it is to time intensive you can always call in theprofessionalas we are here to help.

Uses
PrepLock Quick Dry Oil Based Stain Blocker is a rapid dry oil based paint ideal for locking in water based stains on all interior and exterior surfaces, and priming tannin rich timber. With its outstanding adhesion properties and fast drying formula, it is suitable as a combined primer, sealer and undercoat on all surfaces.
Our Thoughts:
Application Method: airless spraying
Substrates applied to: Interior exposed timber beams & timber panelling
Product performance: The reason for trying this particular product is to decrease the waiting time between coats of paint to speed up the whole painting process, this is ideal if you are completing a DIY project over the weekend or you are a painting contractor on a tight deadline.
While the claims of "Stop tannin bleeding through subsequent coats of paint, thereby preventing topcoat discolouration" were the reason for trying the product it didn't perform as well as hoped . We encountered discolouration in the topcoats after preparing the surfaces correctly, which lead to further coats to rectify the problem.
Besides the discoloration there were no further issues with the product but as it is the main selling point for the product we will stick to more effective methods in the future.
Tips:
• If you do need to use an undercoat which is not water based why not use disposable gloves to save time cleaning your hands and also you don't have to worry about using harsh chemicals.
• Always make sure you have a clean rag to clean up any spills that you may have while completing your DIY project or alternatively you can purchase cleaning wipes by selleys which are good for cleaning up both water and oil based paint.
